What happens if you never blinked again?
Your cornea has no blood supply.
Blinking is the only thing that feeds it, cleans it, and keeps it clear.
Stop for one week and your eye eats itself.
Here is the timeline:
- 10 seconds: the tear film splits apart and dry patches spread across the surface
- 1 minute: dust and bacteria settle on the naked cornea with nothing to sweep them off
- 1 hour: tears pour out and run down your face instead of spreading over the eye
- Day 1: dry patches crack into tiny pits across the clear dome
- Day 3: the pits sink into ulcers and blood vessels crawl in from the corners
- Week 1: the cornea turns cloudy white and your vision drops to a grey blur
You blink around 15 to 20 times a minute, roughly 1,200 times an hour, and you never notice a single one.
You just blinked reading this.
